Career Options
Graduates of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences are equipped to work across government, the private sector, civil society, international organisations, and academia, both in Ghana and abroad. Below is an indication of the career paths open to graduates of each undergraduate programme.
Faculty of Social Sciences
BA. Akan Language and Culture
Graduates work as Akan language teachers in basic and senior high schools, lecturers and tutors at colleges of education, translators and interpreters for courts, media houses, and government agencies, and broadcasters at Akan-language radio and television stations. Others find roles with language and cultural institutions, publishing houses producing Akan textbooks and literature, and cultural heritage bodies. The programme also prepares graduates for postgraduate study leading to careers in academia and linguistic research.
BA. Economics
Graduates pursue careers as economists, research analysts, and policy officers in central and commercial banks, ministries of finance and planning, revenue authorities, statistical services, and development planning bodies. Many enter the financial services sector, working with commercial banks, microfinance institutions, insurance companies, asset management firms, and investment houses. Others build careers with international development organisations, multilateral lenders, audit and consulting firms, and economic research think tanks.
BA. English
Graduates work as English language and literature teachers in basic and senior high schools, lecturers in tertiary institutions, editors, copywriters, and proofreaders in publishing houses and newspapers, content writers and communications officers in corporate organisations, and scriptwriters in the film and broadcasting industry. The degree also prepares graduates for careers in public relations, advertising, technical writing, speechwriting, and roles within ministries of education and education service bodies.
BA. French and Francophone Studies
Graduates work as French language teachers in senior high schools and tertiary institutions, translators and interpreters for ministries of foreign affairs, regional bodies, international organisations, and embassies of Francophone countries. Opportunities exist in the tourism and hospitality industry, international NGOs operating across West Africa, multinational companies with operations in Francophone Africa, and the diplomatic service. The bilingual capacity also opens doors in journalism, cross-border trade, logistics, and Pan-African business consulting.
BA. Geography and Rural Development
Graduates pursue careers in development planning and rural development with national planning commissions, ministries of local government, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, and environmental protection agencies. Others work as project officers and field coordinators with international NGOs and UN agencies. The programme also leads to careers in Geographic Information Systems and remote sensing, urban and regional planning consultancies, climate change and disaster management agencies, lands and survey institutions, and meteorological services.
BA. History
Graduates work as history teachers in senior high schools and tutors at colleges of education, researchers at museums and heritage institutions, archivists at public records bodies, and curators at cultural centres. Others enter careers in journalism, documentary production, tourism (particularly heritage and cultural tourism), publishing, and the diplomatic service. The programme also provides strong foundations for postgraduate study in history, political science, international relations, law, and African studies.
BA. Linguistics
Graduates work as language consultants, translators and interpreters, language teachers, and researchers at linguistic institutes, bible translation bodies, and language documentation organisations. Opportunities exist in forensic linguistics, speech and language therapy (with further training), lexicography, language revitalisation projects, broadcasting, publishing, and increasingly in the technology sector working on natural language processing, voice recognition, and AI-related language data projects.
BA. Media and Communication Studies
Graduates work as journalists, reporters, news anchors, producers, and presenters across print, broadcast, and digital media houses. Others build careers in corporate communications, public relations, advertising, brand management, and digital marketing with agencies and corporate institutions. Additional paths include content creation and social media management, media regulation with national communications and media commissions, political communication, and documentary production.
BA. Political Studies
Graduates pursue careers in the civil service, the foreign service, parliament as research officers and committee clerks, and political party offices as policy analysts and campaign strategists. Opportunities exist with electoral commissions, civic education bodies, human rights commissions, governance think tanks, international organisations, and NGOs working on democracy and good governance. The degree also provides a strong route into law school, journalism, and academia.
Bachelor of Public Administration
Graduates are prepared for careers across the public sector, working as administrative officers, policy analysts, and programme managers in the civil service, ministries, departments and agencies, local government assemblies, public service commissions, and state-owned enterprises. Opportunities also exist in human resource management, project management, and administration with NGOs, international development organisations, and the private sector. The programme is a strong foundation for postgraduate study and for those preparing for leadership roles in government and development institutions.
BA. Religion and Human Development
Graduates work as religious studies teachers in senior high schools, chaplains in schools, hospitals, prisons, and the security services, ministers of religion, and counsellors within religious and faith-based organisations. Others pursue careers in interfaith dialogue and peace-building with national peace councils and ecumenical bodies. The programme also prepares graduates for development work with faith-based NGOs, postgraduate study in theology and religious studies, and roles in cultural heritage and community development.
BA. Sociology
Graduates work as social researchers, monitoring and evaluation officers, and programme officers with NGOs, research firms, and international development organisations. Opportunities exist with statistical services, social welfare departments, ministries of gender and social protection, correctional services, domestic violence and victim support units, and human resource departments of corporate organisations. The programme also prepares graduates for postgraduate study, careers in journalism, market research, policy analysis, and academia.
BA. Social Work
Graduates are trained for direct practice as professional social workers with departments of social welfare and community development, ministries of gender and social protection, child protection units, hospitals and clinical settings (medical social work), schools, and correctional services. Many work with NGOs and faith-based organisations focused on child welfare, gender-based violence, mental health, addiction, persons with disability, the aged, and other vulnerable populations. International opportunities exist with humanitarian and child-focused organisations.
KNUST School of Business
BSc. Business Administration (Human Resource Management/Management)
Graduates work as HR officers, recruitment specialists, training and development officers, compensation and benefits analysts, and HR business partners across the financial services sector, telecommunications, mining, oil and gas, FMCG, and the public sector. Others build careers in organisational development consulting, executive search and recruitment, labour relations, and HR analytics. The Management option additionally opens roles in general management, operations, project management, and entrepreneurship.
BSc. Business Administration (Marketing/International Business)
Graduates work as marketing officers, brand managers, product managers, sales executives, market research analysts, and digital marketing specialists across FMCG, telecommunications, financial services, and the advertising and public relations industry. International Business graduates pursue careers in export and import trade, freight forwarding, cross-border logistics, and with multinational companies and trade promotion bodies. Many also venture into entrepreneurship, brand consulting, and customer experience management.
BSc. Business Administration (Accounting/Banking and Finance)
Graduates pursue careers as accountants, auditors, tax consultants, financial analysts, investment analysts, credit officers, treasury officers, and risk officers with audit and consulting firms, commercial banks, central banks, securities and exchange regulators, stock exchanges, insurance companies, pension fund managers, and investment houses. Many proceed to qualify as Chartered Accountants or pursue ACCA, CIMA, CFA, or CPA. The Banking and Finance option additionally prepares graduates for corporate finance, microfinance, fintech, and Islamic banking roles.
BSc. Business Administration (Logistics and Supply Chain Management/Business Information Technology)
Logistics and Supply Chain graduates work as procurement officers, supply chain analysts, warehouse and inventory managers, logistics coordinators, and operations managers with manufacturing companies, retail chains, shipping and freight companies, oil and gas firms, and public procurement bodies. Business Information Technology graduates work as business analysts, ERP consultants, systems analysts, and IT project managers, bridging business and technology roles within the financial services, telecommunications, fintech, and consulting sectors.
BSc. Hospitality and Tourism Management
Graduates work as hotel managers, front office managers, food and beverage managers, event planners, and revenue managers within the hotel, restaurant, resort, and conference industries. Opportunities also exist with national tourism authorities, ministries of tourism, airlines, travel agencies, tour operators, and international hospitality groups. The programme also prepares graduates for entrepreneurship in restaurants, lodges, tour services, event management, and the wider experience economy.
Faculty of Law
LLB (Bachelor of Laws)
The LLB is the academic qualification for entry into the legal profession in Ghana. After completing the LLB, graduates proceed to the Ghana School of Law for professional training leading to call to the Ghana Bar, after which they may practise as barristers and solicitors with law firms, set up private chambers, or work as in-house counsel for banks, telecommunications companies, mining firms, oil and gas companies, and other corporate organisations. Other legal career paths include state attorneys, judicial service officers and magistrates, legislative drafters, and legal officers with regulatory bodies, anti-corruption agencies, environmental protection agencies, and human rights commissions. LLB graduates who do not enter legal practice find careers in compliance, regulatory affairs, human rights advocacy, diplomacy, academia, alternative dispute resolution, and corporate governance.
