Research Centres

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi (KNUST) supports research, innovation, and community engagement that respond to society's cultural, social, economic, legal, business, and developmental needs. Through its two research centres, the College promotes interdisciplinary scholarship, policy engagement, training, and knowledge creation.

Centre for Cultural and African Studies (CeCASt)

Established in 1974, the Centre for Cultural and African Studies (CeCASt) is the older of the College's two research centres. CeCASt undertakes research, teaching, and co-curricular activities in African studies, cultural studies, and performing arts, with a focus on the historical and contemporary socio-cultural and material practices of everyday life in Africa.

The Centre offers MA, MPhil, and PhD degrees in African Studies, along with non-degree certificates in contemporary African Music and heritage studies. It also provides African Studies (AFS) courses to undergraduate students across all six colleges of the University. CeCASt works with local and international research and cultural institutions to produce and share informed knowledge about African societies, and contributes to the University's broader mandate of producing knowledge relevant to national development, cultural identity, and social transformation.

Its work spans three core areas: research, stakeholder engagement, and curricula and training, with sector focus on healthcare and agricultural value chains. CARISCA seeks to strengthen local capacity to improve supply chains across the continent by increasing efficiency, effectiveness, and inclusiveness.
