The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Career Services Centre, in collaboration with the Department of Accounting and Finance, has organised an industry engagement session to equip students with insights into career opportunities and emerging trends in the accounting profession.
The session, held in partnership with PKF Ghana and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), was themed “Building a Successful Career in Professional Services: Opportunities in Audit, Tax, Advisory, Risk Management, and Consulting.”
Welcoming participants, the Head of the Department of Accounting and Finance, Professor Michael Adusei, mentioned that the programme is an important platform for bridging the gap between academic learning and professional practice through industry collaboration.
He urged students to maximise the opportunity by engaging with industry experts and taking advantage of the networking and CV submission sessions.
“The accounting and finance profession is evolving rapidly with advances in technology, data analytics, and artificial intelligence. To remain competitive, you must complement your academic studies with professional qualifications, practical experience, strong ethical values, and a commitment to continuous learning,” he said.
Mr David Gbedzo, delivering a presentation on the future of accounting in the digital era and navigating careers in accounting, audit, tax and advisory services, highlighted the growing impact of artificial intelligence and automation, stressing that while routine accounting tasks are increasingly being automated, the demand for professionals who can analyse data, solve problems and provide strategic advice will continue to grow.
“The accountant of 2040 will not be replaced. The accountant of 2040 will be someone who understands technology, interprets data, identifies trends, and uses professional judgement to solve business problems,” he stated.
Mr Gbedzo encouraged students to build strong accounting fundamentals while developing skills in data analytics, AI, systems thinking and ethical decision-making to remain relevant in the evolving profession.
Mrs Edna Asempah, Senior Specialist - Business Development, Ghana-Management Accounting, explained that the institute continually reviews its qualifications to reflect the changing needs of employers and the global business environment.
She noted that emerging areas such as digital finance, cybersecurity, machine learning, sustainability, and critical thinking have been incorporated into the CIMA curriculum.
“AI will not take the jobs of finance professionals. It will replace those who fail to embrace technology and develop the skills needed for the future workplace,” she emphasised.
She encouraged students to pursue professional qualifications alongside their university education, noting that CIMA's competency-based approach equips graduates with technical expertise, strategic thinking, and global employability.
Mrs Selina Doe Angmor, Director of the Career Service Centre, explained that engagements with industry players will help students understand employer expectations, explore career pathways, and make informed decisions about their future.
She also encouraged students to take advantage of internship, national service, and professional qualification opportunities available through industry partnerships.
“We have the responsibility of bringing the opportunities your way. It is your responsibility to take advantage of the opportunities that we bring your way,” she added.
The session concluded with students interacting with professionals from PKF Ghana and CIMA Ghana, receiving career guidance and networking opportunities to prepare them for successful careers in professional services.
