The Association of Students of Social Work (ASSOWK), in the Department of Sociology and Social Work at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), successfully observed World Social Work Day on Thursday, 27th March 2025. The event took place at the Faculty of Social Sciences New Block under the global theme “Strengthening Intergenerational Solidarity for Enduring Well-being,” with a sub-theme, “The Importance of Healthy Relationships and Well-being.”

The celebration brought together 377 students, lecturers, and professionals for a day of learning, reflection, and artistic expression.

The programme commenced with an opening prayer by Mr. Obed B. Antwi, followed by a welcome address from Professor Esmeranda Manful, Head of the Department of Sociology and Social Work. In her remarks, Professor Manful highlighted the vital role of social work in fostering well-being through empathy and strong interpersonal relationships.

Delivering the keynote address, Professor Kwadwo Ofori-Dua, a lecturer in the department, spoke on the significance of intergenerational solidarity. He emphasized how mutual respect and connections across age groups strengthen communities and support long-term societal development.

Mr. Rabbi Darko, the College Counsellor for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CoHSS), engaged participants with a practical presentation on building and sustaining healthy relationships. His insights offered students useful tools for navigating both academic and personal life.

The event also featured a compelling drama by the ASSOWK Drama Group, portraying the impact of abusive and unhealthy relationships. The performance encouraged students to make informed, responsible choices. A choreography performance added creativity and energy to the programme.

Citations were presented to individuals and groups for their contributions to student development and the advancement of social work.

Dr. Edward Asamoah, Patron of ASSOWK, delivered the closing remarks. He commended the organisers and encouraged students to apply the lessons gained to improve their communities and personal lives.

Ms. Jennifer Abanga, General Secretary of ASSOWK, gave the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all who contributed to the success of the programme. The event concluded with a closing prayer and refreshments, providing an opportunity for networking and further reflection.
